Ardbeg Distillery

Founded 1815 by John MacDougall
Illegal distilling has been known to take place since 1790’s.
The distillery used their own floormalting 7 days a week until 1976. Then it was gradually reduced until it finally stopped in 1980.
The distillery was mothballed 1981-1989 and again 1996-1997.
Glenmorangie plc bought the distillery in February 1997 for £7 million and started distilling again.
The distillery is equipped with 1 wash still and 1 spirit still.
The water comes from Loch Uigeadail about 5 miles from the distillery.
